An earthquake shakes the border between Jordan and Syria... and Türkiye feels it


 A 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook the Jordanian-Syrian border area on Friday, according to the German Geosciences Research Center GFZ.


The center added that the earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers.

While he revised his estimate of the earthquake, which was felt across Syria and Lebanon, from 5.2 degrees earlier, according to Reuters.

For its part, the Jordanian Seismic Observatory told Al Arabiya.net that an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale was detected at 1:15 pm Amman time on Friday, southeast of Hama in Syria.


Residents of the coastal city of Tartus overlooking the Mediterranean Sea also confirmed that they felt the earthquake.


While residents of Hatay and Gaziantep also felt the earthquake, according to Turkish media.


Shake a few days ago

This comes as a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck central Syria on Monday night, and was felt by residents of several areas in Lebanon.


The head of the Syrian National Seismic Center, Raed Ahmed, said in a statement to the official news agency, SANA, that “an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck the east of the city of Hama at 11:56 at night.”


For its part, the US Geological Observatory announced that the earthquake that struck Syria reached a magnitude of 5, according to Agence France-Presse.


In turn, the official Lebanese National News Agency reported that “some residents of Beirut, Matn, and several areas in the north up to Hermel” felt “a mild earthquake at 11:56 a.m. shortly before midnight on Monday and Tuesday.”


It is noteworthy that on February 6, 2023, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria before dawn, killing about 60,000 people.
