Moscow and Tehran deny reports that Iran is shipping weapons to Russia

The Kremlin on Wednesday denied reports that Iran had shipped missiles to Russia, saying allegations of various arms transfers were baseless.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday that Russia had received ballistic missiles from Iran and was likely to use them in Ukraine within weeks, warning that cooperation between Moscow and Tehran threatened broader European security.

Tehran called Washington’s accusations “ugly propaganda”.

For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Wednesday that Iran had not transferred any ballistic missiles to Russia, adding that sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Troika against his country were not the solution.

“Once again, the United States and the European Troika are acting on faulty intelligence and flawed logic. Iran has not delivered ballistic missiles to Russia. Sanctions are not the solution, they are part of the problem,” he said in a post on the social networking site X. The European Troika are Britain, Germany and France.

Iran has vowed to respond to new sanctions imposed by Britain, Germany and France after those countries accused Tehran of supplying Russia with short-range missiles for use in Ukraine.

“The action taken by the three European countries is a continuation of the West’s hostile policy and economic terrorism against the Iranian people and will be met with appropriate and consistent measures from Iran,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said in a statement late Tuesday.

Blinken said Russia had received ballistic missiles from Iran and was likely to use them in Ukraine within weeks, warning that cooperation between Moscow and Tehran posed a greater threat to Europe’s security.

Along with the United States, France, Germany and Britain have said they will impose new sanctions on Iran, including measures targeting Iran Air.

London, Berlin and Paris also announced the cancellation of bilateral aviation services agreements with Tehran.

Kanaani later said in a statement posted on the Foreign Ministry’s Telegram account that “this action by the three European countries is a continuation of the West’s hostile policy and economic terrorism against the Iranian people, and will be met with a proportionate response from Iran.”

Iran is one of the countries subject to the world’s most severe sanctions.

Experts fear that further sanctions could hurt the middle class in society, not Iran’s leaders.
