Ukraine targets Russian ammunition depot as Moscow advances in the east

A local Ukrainian governor confirmed that three people were killed and three others were injured in Russian artillery shelling of the town of Kostyantynivka in eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian security services said Saturday they had struck a Russian ammunition depot in a border area, as Russian forces claimed further advances on the battlefield.

Ukraine said it had thwarted a "massive" Russian air strike overnight that saw drones launched toward the capital, Kyiv.

The attacks come after a week of heavy Russian bombardment across Ukraine that has killed at least 55 people in the central city of Poltava and seven in the city of Lviv, hundreds of kilometres (miles) from the front and near Ukraine's western borders with the European Union and NATO members.

A large fire and several explosions were reported overnight in Russia's Voronezh region, which borders Ukraine, prompting officials to evacuate local residents living near the blaze.

Governor Alexander Gusev wrote on Telegram that Russian air defence systems had "detected and intercepted" a drone early in the morning.

He added that "no one was hurt" but that the drone's fall caused a fire that "spread to objects containing explosives, causing them to explode", without revealing any details about the nature of these objects or the targeted facility.

He pointed out that "the residents of one of the villages were evacuated" and transferred to neighboring towns, due to the fire. Meanwhile, Russian channels on Telegram reported that the fire broke out in an ammunition depot.

Later, the Ukrainian security services claimed that they had struck a Russian ammunition depot.

A source in the Ukrainian security service told Agence France-Presse that Kiev was targeting "military airports, ammunition depots and infrastructure facilities" in order to "create a demilitarized zone in the Russian regions bordering Ukraine". He described them as "legitimate targets".

Russian forces make relative advances in eastern Ukrainian

The fierce Russian-Ukrainian battles continue in eastern Ukraine, as Moscow announced the capture of the village of Kalinovy in Donetsk, Ukraine, while a local Ukrainian governor confirmed that 3 people were killed and 3 others were injured as a result of Russian artillery shelling on the town of Kostyantynivka in eastern Ukraine. At the same time, the Ukrainian parliament, among other targets, was attacked by Russian drones.

In the details, the Russian Defense Ministry announced in a statement published on Telegram on Saturday that its forces had taken control of the village of Kalinovy in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.

Kalinovy is located southeast of Pokrovsk, a major Ukrainian logistics center threatened by the accelerating Russian advance in the industrial Donbas region in eastern Ukraine.

A census of the population in Ukraine in 2001 showed that the population of Kalinovy was about 200 people.

In another development, Vadym Vilashkin, the governor of Ukraine's Donetsk region, said three people were killed and three others wounded in Russian artillery shelling of the eastern Ukrainian town of Kostyantynivka on Saturday.

Vilashkin said in a post on Telegram that three men aged between 24 and 69 were killed and that a multi-storey building, an office building and a shop were damaged. He said three others suffered minor injuries and were receiving medical care.

Kostyantynivka, an industrial town of about 70,000 before the war, has seen many of its residents leave as it has become increasingly close to the front line during Russia's 30-month-old invasion. It has been regularly hit by rockets, bombs and artillery.

Authorities announced in August a mandatory evacuation of families with children from the town due to the danger posed by the Russian advance.

Russian attack on Ukrainian parliament

Earlier, the Ukrainian air force said on Saturday that Russia had launched 67 long-range Shahed drones into Ukraine in a major attack overnight and that it had shot down 58 of them.

It said in a statement on Telegram that air defense units had intercepted the aircraft in 11 regions across Ukraine.

The Ukrainian parliament said in another statement on Telegram, accompanied by photos, on Saturday that the wreckage of a downed drone had been found next to the parliament building after a Russian attack overnight.

The images showed at least four pieces of debris scattered on the ground near the parliament building. One piece was under the stairs leading to the main entrance to the building, while shrapnel marks were visible on another metal part of the building.

Reporters in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv heard a series of explosions shortly after 3 a.m. (00:00 GMT) on Saturday, some of which echoed loudly in the city center.

Since the start of the military operation in February 2022, Moscow has fired thousands of Shahed missiles and drones into Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Air Force said the Shahed drones took off from two border regions in Russia as well as from Russian-occupied Crimea.
