Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi expressed his agreement with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday on the need to immediately cease fire in the Gaza Strip and calm tensions in the West Bank in order to achieve peace, while Erdogan stressed that his country will continue to cooperate with Egypt to rebuild Gaza.
Sisi said that the Turkish president's visit to Cairo represents a new page in relations between the two countries, noting his aspiration to accept Erdogan's invitation to visit Turkey next April.
He added that Egypt will raise the level of joint economic cooperation with Turkey to $15 billion in the coming years.
For his part, the Turkish president expressed his happiness to visit Cairo after an absence, saying that his country and Egypt share a common history, expressing his desire to raise the level of bilateral relations.
Speaking about the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, Erdogan stated that the situation in Gaza topped the agenda of his discussions with Sisi, noting that delivering aid to Gaza is one of their top priorities.
Erdogan stressed that his country will not accept the displacement of the residents of the Gaza Strip, and expressed his appreciation for Egypt's role in rejecting forced displacement.
After deteriorating following the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi in 2013, relations between the Turkish and Egyptian presidents have improved significantly in the past two years, and the two countries have taken steps towards reconciliation, with their positions converging on many regional issues, especially the Israeli war on Gaza. Despite the deterioration in political relations, trade relations between the two countries have remained good, as Turkey is Egypt's fifth-largest trading partner, while the latter is Turkey's first economic partner in Africa. The past few years have witnessed mutual visits by officials and delegations from both countries.
